https://www.ronaldbooks.com/Horror-22/Some+Haunted+Houses+by+Elliot+ODonnell-4019

The author writes:

In selecting a series of ghost stories for this volume I have taken the greatest care to make use of those only which are thoroughly well authenticated.
The result of this discrimination has been that the majority of these accounts of psychic phenomena have been taken from the lips of eye-witnesses and transferred to manuscript in as nearly as possible the narrators own language.
First-hand narratives of unfamiliar hauntings, albeit they refer to the meaner class of houses, will, I think, be more welcome to the reader than the mere repetition of such hackneyed stories as those appertaining to Glamis Castle, the Tower of London, &c.
In one other point, too, this work may be said to differ from others dealing with the same subject - viz., it is compiled and written by a very keen psychic - one who has not only investigated (and lectured on) haunted houses, but has himself seen many occult manifestations.

https://www.ronaldbooks.com/Horror-22/Signs+Wonders+by+J+D+Beresford-3472

A totally weird conglomeration of little novellas, a play, and short stories, all about the supernatural, ghosts, the furture.  It's a mix a futuristic horror and fantasy, drama and science fiction.

John Davys Beresford (17 March 1873 – 2 February 1947) was an English writer, now remembered for his early science fiction and some short stories in the horror story and ghost story genres. Beresford was a great admirer of H.G. Wells, and wrote the first critical study of Wells in His Wellsian novel The Hampdenshire Wonder was a major influence on Olaf Stapledon. His other science-fiction novels include The Riddle of the Tower, about a dystopian, hive-like society. fe Beresford abandoned his earlier agnosticism and described himself as a Theosophist and a pacifist .Beresford was also interested in psychology, and attended several meetings organised by A.R. Orage to discuss psychological issues. Other attendees at these meetings included Havelock EllisClifford SharpDavid Eder and Maurice NicollBeresford also contributed to numerous publications; in addition to being a book reviewer for The Manchester Guardian, he also wrote for the New StatesmanThe SpectatorWestminster Gazette, and the Theosophist magazine The Aryan Path. At one point, Beresford was offered the editorship of the pacifist magazine Peace News but declined because he felt he "would be a bad editor". Beresford's interest in the spiritual and philosophical may be best illustrated by the publisher notes to his novel, On A Huge Hill"Mr Beresford's readers have long known that that for him there are more things in heaven or earth than are dreamt of in official medical philosophy. He has used his novelist's skill to convince the sensitive reader that the age of miracles is not over, and that, in certain circumstances, the spirit may exercise what seem to us miraculous powers over the substance of the body. This he did in 'The Camberwell Miracle' and 'Peckover'; and in this absorbing novel, he returns to the theme, with the study of a man fitting himself to become a great healer." Dorothy L. Sayers quotes from Beresford's essay "Writing Aloud" in her book on theology, Mind of the Maker. She also mentions him in passing in Whose Body?.

https://www.ronaldbooks.com/Horror-22/Second+Variety-1105

"Second Variety" occurs in the aftermath of an extensive nuclear war between the Soviet Union (sometimes referred to as Russia) and the United Nations. Early Soviet victories forced the North American government and production to flee to a Moon Base, leaving the majority of their troops behind. To counter the almost complete Soviet victory, U.N. technicians develop robots, nicknamed claws—the basic models are "a churning sphere of blades and metal" that ambush their unsuspecting victims "spinning, creeping, shaking themselves up suddenly from the gray ash and darting toward… [any warm body]." U.N. forces are protected from the claws by a special radiation-emitting wrist tab. Within six years, the sophisticated and independent claws have destroyed the Soviet forces, repairing and redesigning themselves in automated underground factories run without any human oversight.

The U.N. forces receive a message from the Soviets asking for a policy-level officer to go to them for a gravely urgent conference. The U.N. victory was costlier than they had expected. Major Joseph Hendricks is sent to negotiate with the Soviets. En route to the rendezvous, he meets a small boy named David who asks to accompany Hendricks. When they near the Soviet bunker, soldiers immediately kill the boy, revealing him to be an android. The claws' development program has evolved to develop sophisticated robots, indistinguishable from humans, designed to infiltrate and kill. The three Soviets met by Major Hendricks—soldiers Klaus, Rudi, and a young woman named Tasso—reveal that the entire Soviet army and command structure collapsed under the onslaught of the new robots - they are all that are left in the command center.
From salvaged internal metal identification plates, two varieties are identified: I-V, a wounded soldier, and III-V, David. II-V—the "second variety"—remains unknown. The different models are produced independently of each other in different factories. The Soviets also reveal that the U.N. protective tabs are ineffective against the new robots. Hendricks attempts to transmit a warning to his H.Q. bunker, but is unable to do so.

https://www.ronaldbooks.com/Horror-22/Ringstones+by+Sarban-3470

Buried deep in the reaches of vast antiquity lie the ancient customs, the vicious "games", the laws of the privileged lords and his enslaved minions. Sarban's preoccupation is chiefly with the remote brooding past which, certain circumstances, refuses to die, but jealously invades the present through the life and sanity of just such a healthy young animal as the heroine of RINGSTONES.

Sarban's fantasy tale leans toward pornography, but he perhaps got away with so much kinkiness because he was writing in a more innocent time. Perhaps that is why he used a nom de plume?

An outstanding mad scienctist novel featuring an amateur detective who stumbles upon the work of a scientist who is transforming people into someone else.  It is sort of like a mixture of Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, and The Most Dangerous Game rolled into one.

A very spooky story centering around the dogs at a French estate an Englishwoman is considering purchasing in the early 20th century and a murder that occurred centuries before.  Wharton does a good job of building the suspense and then summing up the history of the estate as the denouement. A young woman marries an older wealthy man. All seems well at first. The husband then starts to terrorize his young wife. He murders various dogs that come into her life.

Jimbo by Algernon Blackwood.

An unusual tale, one of the most unusual stories every written perhaps.  A supernatural fantasy about the mystical adventures of a lonely English boy named Jimbo–who can fly! It’s really quite beautiful and can be enjoyed by adults and teenagers alike. Be warned, however: The death of a beloved character and a creepy old house haunted by the wraith-like spirits of children makes some of this story far too scary for younger kids or indeed anyone of a sensitive disposition. Algernon Blackwood (1869-1951) was born in south London and wrote many tales of the supernatural.

https://www.ronaldbooks.com/Horror-22/Frankenstein+by+Mary+Shelley-683

Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is a novel written by English author Mary Shelley (1797-1851) that tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a grotesque but sapient creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. Shelley started writing the story when she was 18, and the first edition of the novel was published anonymously in London on 1 January 1818, when she was 20. Her name first appeared on the second edition, published in France in 1823.
Shelley travelled through Europe in 1814, journeying along the river Rhine in Germany with a stop in Gernsheim which is 17 km (10 mi) away from Frankenstein Castle, where, two centuries before, an alchemist was engaged in experiments.] Later, she travelled in the region of Geneva (Switzerland)—where much of the story takes place—and the topic of galvanism and other similar occult ideas were themes of conversation among her companions, particularly her lover and future husband, Percy Shelley. Mary, Percy, Lord Byron and John Polidori decided to have a competition to see who could write the best horror story. After thinking for days, Shelley dreamt about a scientist who created life and was horrified by what he had made; her dream later evolved into the novel's story.
Frankenstein is infused with elements of the Gothic novel and the Romantic movement. At the same time, it is an early example of science fiction. Brian Aldiss has argued that it should be considered the first true science fiction story because, in contrast to previous stories with fantastical elements resembling those of later science fiction, the central character "makes a deliberate decision" and "turns to modern experiments in the laboratory" to achieve fantastic results.[5] It has had a considerable influence in literature and popular culture and spawned a complete genre of horror stories, films and plays.
Since the novel's publication, the name "Frankenstein" has often been used to refer to the monster itself. This usage is sometimes considered erroneous, but usage commentators regard it as well-established and acceptable. In the novel, the monster is identified by words such as "creature", "monster", "demon", "wretch," "abortion," and "it". Speaking to Victor Frankenstein, the wretch refers to himself as "the Adam of your labours", and elsewhere as someone who "would have [been] your Adam", but is instead "your fallen angel" (which ties to Lucifer in Paradise Lost, which the monster reads, and relates to the "modern" Prometheus of the book's subtitle).
